Interracial Intimacy: The Regulation of Race and Romance Works Cited Missing Regardless of our social rhetoric of color-blindness, when it comes to choosing a spouse we seem to be remarkably aware of color, at least we were legally for more than 200 years and despite legal permission, society still exacts a social opinion on the matter. Law professor Rachel Moran examines this issue in Interracial Intimacy: The Regulation of Race and Romance and argues that the promise of racial justice is tied to integrating our most personal relationships. It is not that interracial marriages will solve the race problem in the United States. Society wants the government to ignore race in order to do justice, while it insists race must be seen to remedy injustice. Moran simultaneousl y contends that race shouldnt matter and that race does matter. She argues that distinctions between political equality and social equality have threatened both. Furthermore, different racial categories have been treated very differently. Moran makes certain to include those distinctions made during Reconstruction and the later Civil Rights Movement, which are generally perceived as positive. Penalties for black-white transgressions were often violent. However, officially, Latinos and Latinas were never subject to antimiscegenation regulations and in Virginia the Pocahontas exception meant that some families with Native American ancestry were considered white. In colonial times black slaves and white indentured servants often worked side by side, and interracial sex was not rare. Regulations arose to reinforce the boundary between free and unfree. People who are driven by greed end up focusing on what they do not have instead of being grateful for what they do have. This is relevant in the short story ââ¬Å"The Necklaceâ⬠by Guy de Maupassant because Mathilde Loisel ends up losing everything she owns just because she lets greed drive her decisions and get the best of her. When receiving an invitation to an extravagant ball, she declines because she says she does not have anything nice to wear. In the beginning of the short story she says, ââ¬Å"There is nothing more humiliating than looking poor in the middle of a lot of rich women.(Maupassant).â⬠The reader sees how she puts value in possessions and what others think of her. The readerââ¬â¢s first impression of the character is that she is unhappy and resentful but at the party she comes off just the opposite. She was joyful and ââ¬Å"danced wildly, with passion, drunk on pleasure, forgetting everything in the triumph of her beautyâ⬠(3). Mathilda Loiselââ¬â¢s true character starts to reveal itself when the reader sees how much value she puts in possessions. The necklace serves as a symbol for greed. When Mathilda Loisel loses the necklace that she believed was worth forty thousand francs, she desperately retraces her steps and gets her husband to help her find it as well. It ends up taking ten years to pay off the debt. Organizational Consumers (i) Monthly Contract In this contract, we will have an agreement with selected organization in order to ensure our normal weekday sales do not tumble vigorously when compared to our weekend sales. Therefore, the agreement with the organization will help to balance up the average sales in a month. For the terms and conditions, the organization will need to fulfil in terms of volume of cars send for our car wash. For example, the minimum volume needed to fulfil by the organization is 60 cars. We also indicated that the cars are allowed to be sent only on weekdays. To package the contract and make it more attractive, we will provide the organization with 5% commission of total sales obtained from the organization and the commissions will be paid in the next month. The contract will only valid for the month which the contract being legally signed. Hence, by applying this system, our monthly sales will not severely affected by the seasonal patterns. (ii) Quarter Yearly Contract In this contract, the system works similarly to the monthly contract. The difference is the time period has been extended from a month to 4 months. The organization will be given a new minimum volume of cars which is 250 cars in 4 months time. In addition, the percentage of commissions will also increase to 10% of total sales obtained from the organization. Payment of commissions will be done monthly. The contract will only valid for the 4 months which are legally indicated in the contract. Thus, with this contract, the stability of our sales will increasingly strengthen. Operational Plan 6. 1 Description of Companyââ¬â¢s Operation BlitzWash Car Wash is a process-focussed as well as product-focussed operation whereby we focus on the washing process in minimising the time consumption yet not deteriorating the quality of our service products. With a warehouse of 7, 500 square feet, we have expanded the warehouse into 10, 000 square feet through renovation, as to maximise our space for machinery and higher carrying capacity. Besides that, our location is strategically located in Segambut Pusat where we are surrounded by car service centres and car dealerships. Thus, we believe we have huge potential business opportunity in this location. For car wash operation, customers who have selected the express package will be directed into the tunnel mode car wash machine by our staff that will be controlling the traffic flow at the entrance. As their cars are exiting the tunnel, there are direction signs to acknowledge them of the traffic flow towards the main exit of our shop. Along their path to exit, they will pass by the cash counter where they will make their payment for our service. In addition, for customers who have selected other packages, they will be directed to the designated parking lots for further service process. We have provided a rest room for the customers who will need to wait for the cars to be serviced. There is Wi-Fi service provided in our shop for customers. To add in extra revenue for our business, we do also have beverage sales where drinks are being sold to mainly customers who have seek for our car wash services. In BlitzWash Car Wash, every Monday is an off day for the business. For the operation hours, in weekdays, our car wash be in operation starting from 10 a. m. to 8 p. m. while for weekends, we are operating starting from 8 a. m. to 9 p. m. We do also apply the policy of working on holidays where double payment will be given to our washing staff but not management staff. However, there are holidays which we are close for operation such as Labour Day. In short, we are fully equipped with sufficient machinery and equipments with devoted employees to cater for the huge car wash industry in Segambut. 6. 2 Flow of Orders for Goods and Services Basically, we will make an order for goods monthly. In every month, the last week will be the closing week for our shop where an inventory check will be performed by our administration clerk. Once the remaining stocks have been keyed in into the computer system, appropriate purchase orders will be produced. Our detergents and car care products are ordered through online whereas our beverage stocks are ordered through sales representative and phone calls. The receiving of goods will be monitored by administration clerk as the logistic transportation arrived. We will only receive goods on weekdays. 6. Technology Utilization In terms of technology, we have brought in advance technology into our business operation. For car wash service, we have the Gantry Car Wash Machine QLX-10 which can operate for long hours swiftly and efficiently. This tunnel mode machine consume a time period of five to eight minutes per car for every single wash. While for manual car wash services, we have high qu ality and efficient water spray machines, foam spray machines, and polishers. For daily monetary sales, we have the cash register installed at our counter for recording every sale transactions occurred in our shop. This Sharp Cash Register XE-A102 has widely spaced keys lessen the chances of hitting the wrong key and its small footprint means it takes up the minimum counter space without sacrificing functionality. The 9-digit LED display is incorporated to clearly show the user price, total, change, and time. Four departments have been pre-programmed at the factory to minimise setup time. Two of them are preset for vatable items and two are preset for non-vatable items. Besides that, by simply turning the key to the Flash mode and pressing one key the store manager can get a quick look at the days sales. The Flash report can quickly display sales totals by department or for the whole store as well as the cash in drawer amount. A memory-equipped calculator function for whole number calculations can be activated with the mode switch. Therefore, we will be able to accurately monitor the daily sales of products in each category in order to calculate the contribution of revenue gained from each category. The printer is able to print as fast as 8. 5 seconds per paper with a duty cycle of up to 8000 pages per month. This transmission time needed for this fax machine is approximately 15 seconds. Marketing Plan 7. 1 Pricing Price is the amount charged for a product by the provider to customer. This is the most flexible element of marketing mix yet this is also the element which will cause us the most troubles. In the process of price setting, we have included several factors which affect our pricing decisions. Firstly, our marketing objective has been set as current profit maximization which means we will try to make as much profit as we can. Besides that, we are applying the concept of cost based pricing as well where we emphasise on covering on our costs. To attract more customers during low season, we will set up a discounted price packages for the promotion period. This information will be disseminated through the distribution of flyers in the local newspaper. We are not focusing much on the promotional events as we believe that normal daily sales and contract sales are sufficient to ensure no loss occurred in our yearly sales. In addition, we believe that during festival seasons, they will contribute to more sales in our business. In short, we do have promotional activities but we do not emphasizing on it. 7. Product Forecasts For our business in five years, we will have no changes in providing our service as in our car wash packages, car care products and beverages. We believe that our planning of these items is sufficiently able to cater to the market demand. Although modern world requires creativity to strive for highest profit in business, we believe that with these products, we are able to gain our Return of Investment (ROI) i n these five year planning periods. Moreover, in the car wash industry, the demand is increasing gradually with the increasing statistic of new car sales. In brief, we strongly believe that our packages will be in strong demand as we cater for all categories of car wash service with worthy price charged. 7. 5 Controls Controls will be divided into several aspects which will be elaborated in below: Establishing Standards: In order to control stocks, there will be three types of standards to establish which are quality, quality and standard costs. Quality standard is the degree of excellence of raw materials, finished products and work force. Quantity standard is the measurement of weight, count or volume used to make comparisons and judgments. Standard cost is the calculation of cost of goods and services identified, approved and accepted by management. Record and Report: Manager can extract information about the business operations, cash flows and stocks flow from records and report. However, reports can be very general and sometimes even bias. Manager need to be objective, focus on the issues involved and not rely on reports totally to make decisions. Specific reports would be more useful. The plasma membrane is by-layer composed of lipids and embedded proteins. This membrane is semi-permeable due to its hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions. At the boundary of every cell the plasma membrane functions as a selective barrier that allows nutrients to be brought in and/or removed from inside the cell. The cells permeability and transport mechanisms allow for this occurrence and it is vital for a functional and healthy cell. Transport through the plasma membrane occurs in two basic ways: passive and active processes. The passive transport process is driven by the concentration or pressure differences between the interior and exterior environment of the cell. Four membranes were used and each possessed a different molecular weight cut off (MWCO) consisting of 20, 50, 100, and 200 MWCO; and were tested using NaCl, Urea, Albumin, and Glucose solutions. First, the 20 MWCO membrane was placed in the membrane holder between the beakers and the first solute studied was NaCl. A 9mM concentrated solution was dispersed into the left beaker and the right beaker was filled with deionized water. This transfer was allowed 60 minutes. At the end of this time lapse the results were recorded (see result section of the report). The 20 MWCO membrane was removed and each beaker was flushed for the next run. A membrane with the 50 MWCO was placed between the beakers and the steps performed above were repeated using the 9 mM NaCl solution for 60 min. and then repeated again for the 100 and 200 MWCO, as described by the A P Lab Manual by Marieb and Mitchell. The next solutions tested were Albumin, Urea, and Glucose. All were placed into the left beaker independently and the tests were run exactly like that for NaCl. Activity Two: Facilitated Diffusion In this experiment the set-up of the two beakers and membrane holder was used again. Only NaCl and Glucose solutes were used and membranes with 500, 700 and 900 glucose carrier proteins The 500 membrane was placed between the beakers and the glucose solution with a concentration of 2. 00mM was delivered to the left beaker. The right beaker was filled with deionized water. The timer was set for 60 minutes. When the time was up the data was recorded and the beakers were flushed to set up for the next run. The same steps were repeated using the 2. 00 mM glucose solution with the 700 and 900 carrier protein membranes, separately for 60 minutes. The last run of this transport mechanism was done by increasing the 2. 00mM to 8. 00mM glucose concentration. This experiment was done the same way as above for each of the 500, 700 and 900 carrier protein membranes for 60 min. respectively. Activity 3: Osmotic Pressure In this experiment pressure readers were added in order measure osmotic pressure change and were placed on top the two beakers. A 20 MWCO membrane was placed between the beakers and a NaCl concentration of 8mM was put into the left beaker. Deionized water was placed into the right beaker. Time was set at 60 minutes. The pressure steps were repeated with the 50, 100 and 200 MWCO membranes Activity 4: Active Transport This experiment resembled the osmosis experiment except that an ATP dispenser was substituted for the pressure meters on top of the beakers. In this experiment it was assumed that the left beaker was the inside of the cell and the right beaker was the extracellular space. The membrane used had 500 glucose carrier proteins and 500 sodium-potassium pumps. Membrane was placed between the beakers and a NaCl concentration of 9. 00mM was delivered into the left beaker and a KCl concentration of 6mM was dispensed into the right beaker. The ATP was the changing variable in this experiment. 1mM of ATP was dispensed and transfer was observed for 60 min. It was observed when no ATPmM was applied and finally when 3mM ATP was applied. Urea diffused at 100 MWCO and up. Albumin had no di ffusion through any of the membranes and Glucose diffused only through the 200 MWCO membrane. Albumin had a constant pressure of 136 mm Hg with every membrane and Glucose had constant pressure of 136 mm Hg until it was relieved when the 200 MWCO membrane was introduced. Discussion Activity 1: Simple Diffusion Upon observing the results for all of the solutes with the 20 MWCO membrane between the left beaker and the artificial external environment of deionized water in the right beaker no diffusion occurred, because the pores were not large enough for them to pass through. An observation that is important to note is that even the small ions of NaCl did not diffused here, so it is obvious that the other molecules would also not diffuse. At 50 MWCO the pores were just large enough for the dissociated NaCl ions to get through but the threshold stopped there because Urea, Albumin and Glucose molecules in the solute were too large. Observations of the diffusion of the solutes with the 100 MWCO membrane showed that all but albumin and Glucose passed, so urea size was now compatible for the size of this pore. Finally, when the 200 MWCO membrane was introduced everything except Glucose got through because it is a very large molecule that cannot diffuse simply. It must be facilitated. Activity 2: Facilitated Diffusion In the facilitated diffusion of Glucose the parameters that were introduced were the number of carrier proteins available for transport in the membrane. According to the results, when there was a 2. 00mM concentration of Glucose in the left beaker there was evidence of diffusion based on the measured rate of diffusion in mM/min. As the number of carrier proteins increased by 200 between 500 and 900 the rate between 0 . 0008 to 0. 0012mM/ min also increased by 0. 0002 min into the beaker. When 8. 00mM of Glucose was placed in the left beaker with the same carrier protein membrane criteria of 500, 700, and 800 the rate increased. The rate was actually faster than that of the 2. 00 mM concentration. As the concentration of glucose raised the demand for the protein attachment increased so more carrier proteins got involved, while previously some were just hanging out because there was less glucose to transfer. Activity 3: Osmosis In this experiment the study was based on the transfer of water across a membrane. Osmosis of water tends to balance out concentrations, so it will flow to an area of higher solute concentration. Water flowing to a more concentrated solution will usually increase in volume but in this closed system for the experiment the focus was on the increase of pressure. The solutes were confined to their area by a semi-permeable membrane based on the pores of the membrane and the size of the molecules in the solute. With 8mM of NaCl with a 20 MWCO membrane the pressure reading was 272 mHg because the salt was not able to pass through the membrane, but the water diffused to the salt side so there was pressure causing and unequal balance, but with the membranes of 50, 100 and 200 MWCO there was no pressure because the membrane became permeable to the salt allowing an equilibrium between he beakers, therefore no pressure. In the case of Albumin, the water diffused building up pressure until there was no more water left to diffuse so pressure remained constant at all MWCOs. The same occurred with Glucose until the membrane was replaced with the 200 MWCO membrane. Glucose was able to diffuse thus resulting in equilibrium in both beakers. Pressure will rise until equilibrium is obtained. Activity 4: Active Transport The experiment showed that at 1 ATP the reaction took place at very slow rate and not completely. Without ATP the transfer didnââ¬â¢t take place at all. When 3 ATPââ¬â¢s were added transfer took place quickly and almost completely. The more ATP introduced to the cell, the faster and more complete the transport will occur which is very important for the transport of glucose since it is a substrate for the production of more ATP.
